Do we need fewer teachers?
I am still working through this, but here is where I am up to:
I love blackboxes. Input -> [Blackbox] -> Output
Once you tell me what goes into it and what I should expect out of it, why should I know what happens in between?
And then you get those (teachers) who tell you it’s good to know this (how things work) so that you understand things better.
OK. But let’s go back to the beginning; what I want is the ‘Output’, and I have the “Input”. By trying to enlighten me, you are ignoring what I want. And so you become a teacher wishing to educate me.
I have my suspicions on where this teacher mentality comes from. Over the years some people have been told, “Invest $1 into this blackbox and it will output $2.” They did, but they only got back $1.50! What? How did this happen? They then started wondering about how the blackbox works. And they have wanted other people to know to look ‘deep’ into the blackbox and understand how it works.
So, do we need more teachers? Well it seems we do. As long as there exists blackboxes that don’t do what they are supposed to.
Perhaps we need “true blackbox” certification.
